Hopeful signs for women: Forbes fifth annual ranking showcases women who have beat out men for top posts this year.
Are women close to achieving full equality?
Where?
:)
Apparently they are but not in the US, where the white male is the preferred stock in this country. It is too bad they did not show just how many women were head of states in the world. This should make us all bend our collective heads in shame.
We had a grand opportunity to put a woman at the helm and what happens they still pick a man over her. A black man no less, so next election year they will pick a Hispanic man, then an Asian, an Indian man and even a gay man but NEVER a woman, despite how qualified she is. Waht a crying shame.
Fed up voter, your statement that "the white male is the preferred stock in this country" is a sexist, racist statement.
Why does everyone assume that having female leaders means less war? I don't know about you but in my family it's the women constantly gossiping and bickering about one another. The men sit and stare at the walls, TVs or the neighbors boat. If they do fight over something stupid and a few punches are thrown, they don't even remember the next day. It's the WOMEN who carry this stuff on for years and years. I still have to hold back the rage at my MIL for something that happened 8yrs. ago!
deedee, There is something scary about saying blacks are "due" to be elected to top office because they were originally brought here in slavery. That cannot be a qualification for elected office.
Moira, Deedee is typical leftist.
Too bad that Rice will go down in history as one of the worst Secretary's of State.
I have had a 20 year career in a scientific field where men far outnumber women. I have worked with several different companies and all types of people. I have found that if you are good at what you do, and don't want or expect to be treated differently from a man, equality is there.
I have worked part time the last few 10 years so that I could spend time with my children. I think more and more companies are allowing men and women to find this balance. It is out there!
Glass ceiling? I'm a 38 year old male and I've not seen women treated any differently in any job in higher education. In fact, women seem to be surpassing males in numbers in administrative jobs, and they also receive higher salaries. I am actually seeing the trend in the opposite direction, with men losing out. We've been trying so hard to correct problems in the past that we have over corrected.
I'd like to see Condoleezza Rice on the ticket with John McCain....now there's a ticket!
This article featured Condi's picture so I'll comment on her. Condoleezza Rice rose to the top of the Bush administration, but that really doesn't say too much. Just look at WHO appointed her? Condoleezza Rice was appointed to her position by the same guy that appointed a horse judge (Bush appointed Michael Brown) to run the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). That was a disaster when Katrina hit. Bush's appointments always leave something to be desired. Remember when he tried to appoint his personal secretary to the Supreme Court? Harriet Ellan Miers was Bush's personal secretary in the White House and personal lawyer when he was the gov of Texas. She was never a judge. Bush seems to have a knack for appointing people that are his friends and are not qualified for the job. So rising to the top of THIS administration is not an accomplishment, it's a favor.
you piece of trash Pandaman you are a typical left-wing liberal that bashes everything conservative in todays world!!! If Condoleeza was picked as McCain's running mate they would kick ass. She is an educated women of extreme knowledge in foriegn affairs, domestic affairs and all other political situations in this country. George W.Bush choose excellent supreme court justices that are very fair in their rulings. You are pushing Odumba with no experiance at any part of our government. 173 wasted days in the senate with nothing to show for it. No knowledge on Foreign affairs, except
what his vp pick Radical "big mouth joe" knows which is very little. Odumbe had a mother that was
into Markism..her parents are also into Markism even today. He calls his inlaws conservative, I call them communist. By supporting Odumba you are supporting radical muslims that had wished and done harm to this country for two decades. How Sad!!!!!!!!!!!!!Wake Up.....
Pandaman, you are making a FOOL out of yourself, just like the typical far-leftie. To say, or imply, that Condi Rice is not qualified for her job is LUDICROUS!!!!
How many of their friends did Bill and Hillary appoint to high level positions?
Gee I thought Hillary was the most important woman in the world, at least in her mind.
Refreshing not to see her or Pelosi in the top ten.

Pandaman -
I am sure you are not half the person Secretary Rice is.
I am sure you are not a quarter the person she is.
You are pathetic.
How dare you!
Calm down. Talk about anger. No wonder McCain is running for the republican party. It's the anger management party. Hahaha Let me see if I understand. I'm a piece of trash and pathetic for speaking my mind? Well isn't that the American way where the average guy can speak out against the rich? I never called her any names. I just stated some facts and made some opinions. Many woman are great leaders, but having a high position in the Bush administration is not necessarily a great accomplishment IN MY OPINION, okay? My examples were Harriet Myers and Michael Brown. Did "Brownie" really do a great job? Do you remember all the people that died during Katrina because of his poor management? Was Harriet Myers qualified to be on the highest court in the land when she was never a judge?
If you can't dispute these facts, then go ahead and bring up Bill Clinton's appointments and we can go through them. They were probably just ambassadors (like Shirley Temple Black) and didn't hold critical positions. But if you insist, please be specific and name some names. Thank you and have a nice day.
If women have achieved equality, why was Lilly Ledbetter a featured speaker at this week's DNCC to discuss the fact that Women and others still are not guaranteed equal pay for equal work under the law? Why is the Fair Pay Act that bears her name still held up in Congress, when the legislation simply serves to clarify and restore the language of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act -- the original legislation, btw, which was passed years before I was born (I am in my mid-30s) -- while also clarifying the prior statute of limitations for such discrimination. Why did Justice Bader-Ginsberg, in the dissenting argument she read ALOUD before the Supreme Court for Ledbetter vs. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., talk about how difficult it remains for women in the workplace with respect to pay discrimination?
Why did the GAO indicate in a recent report requested by Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) that, even when controlling for key factors, they cannot account for the reasons why women continue to receive $.77 to the dollar compared to men doing the same work, even when women are outpacing men in college enrollment and academic achievement and are more likely today than in past decades to be found in so-called "non-traditional" (male dominated) occupations? Why is Family Responsibilities Discrimination -- a phenomenon that affects both men and women, but disproportionately affects women because mothers most often are primary caregivers for young children -- one of the fastest rising forms of litigation in the United States? Why are U.S. women most likely to find themselves spending their old age in poverty?
These questions and their answers are just the tip of the iceberg. While I applaud the achievements of the women Forbes recognized in its article, it is misleading, irresponsible, and naive to suggest that those are reflective of the typical economic and workplace conditions many if not most U.S. women face.
My take is that Hillary has to realize that if Obama loses this race, with all of its Democratic advantages, the Democratic party will not nominate another African American or a woman again for another twenty years. The "risk" would not be tolerated in the country.
Clinton would do well to be an also ran of the stature of Ted Kennedy in the Senate.
funny how the left always want to rip on Condoleza Rice (Pandaman?). They print racist cartoons and state she only got where she is by affirmative action. Guess what, she is far more educated than Barry Obama. Actually grew up poor and in the deep South and unlike Barry she is BLACK. Hillary only rose to her position by marrying Bill. End of story, Condi is far more qualified to be President of the US than either Barry or Hillary. Course, the left and their minions in the MSM where racism and sexism is alive and well would never accept her. Why? She does not see herself as a VICTIM.
I wish she would be McCain's running mate.
They'd call her an uncle tom, though.
It's finally said!! How has Hillary Clinton made history? Was she the first female first lady? first female senator? Everything she has done has been on the coattails of her husband.
I'm not ripping Condi in particular. I only mentioned her because MSNBC used her picture for it's article. I'm ripping the Bush administration. And I don't think she's stupid. She has a PHd. But I criticize her because 1) she WAS appointed to her position by Bush and 2) she has not distanced herself from the president that lied us into war. Millions of innocent people have died and that is very significant and unforgivable.
And please don't play the race card. Who cares what color anybody is anyway? Barack Obama is the better "American" to lead this country into the future. He inspires hope instead of fear and that's what the American people want.
Perhaps you should just look at German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Condoleezza Rice. Two examples that women are making inroads to the top positions.
thats where the Truth is

World's most powerful women.............?
How about the most powerful woman...? That would be her royal self-appoined demi-god, all knowing queen oprah winfrey. After all, the raging 'mirror, mirror on the wall' narcissistic megalomaniac has been telling hordes of women, least of which not brain-dead gomer women, as well, the rest of once impressive America what to think and do. Aldous Huxley's "Thoughtspeak" is today "Oprahspeak".........., now enlivened by her plant, barry (changed his first name to) barack hussein obama whose endless lying rhetoric too many Americans are not stopping to think about.
History could effectively repeat itself from roughly 70 years ago if America refuses to not stop listening to the hysterical melody and concentrate on the lyrics. It's all in the lyrics stupid America and oprah & co. is laughing behind closed doors.
Women, Men eqaulity, blah, blah....
Just live your life and do good. Who cares who is more powerfull? God is the all powerfull. All others including us will die.
This power thing is just an illusion......
How stupid....
I have known many strong, intelligent women who have risen to the top of their profession, but have still not been paid the same salary as their male peers. So, I think women can break the glass ceiling from the standpoint of reaching high-ranking positions, but there is still work to be done to close the salary gap. As a corporate manager myself, I have seen women hired into positions at a severely lower rate of pay than men hired into the same positions. This puts them at a lifelong disadvantage because no matter how hard they work or how many promotions they get, it is almost impossible to catch up in pay. Because companies do everything in their power to keep salaries secret, it is extremely difficult to correct these imbalances.
Women will not have achieved true equality until equal pay for equal work is a reality, but they're a heck of a lot closer to it than people of color.
I agree with the earlier poster that Condi Rice is not necessarily the example that you want to promote. Bush's hires and nominations have been almost universally disastrous.
First of all, I think Condi Rice has a very difficult job to do, and is doing it quite well. Second of all, that people of color remark is total baloney, and you know it, so enough of it already.

Current Female governors - 8 out of 50
Current Female Senators - 16 out of 100
Black Governors - 3 EVER, only 2 elected
Black Senators - 5 EVER, only three in this century, one of whom was.....a woman!
There have been dozens of female senators and governors in the past, in addition to the current ones.
I consider myself a feminist. I have two daughters, and I want them to have any opportunity that boys or men would have. I made that point about equal pay for equal work because I believe it's a fundamental injustice that is inexcusable in this day and age. I am a firm believer in Title IX, and I don't care how many men's sports teams get cut to make the numbers balanced between the sexes.
I just think that if we're going to be honest about which is more difficult to overcome when running for statewide or national office, I think the overwhelming answer is that it is blackness, not femaleness.
The hand that rules the world is the hand that rocks the cradle!!
Is there a glass ceiling? You bet in politics!!! Fact is there has never been a woman in the White House as Commander and Cheif. Is there a glass ceiling in business? Depends on the company. I have found in some of the companies I have worked for that there is still a "good ole boy network" and in other companies they respect women who are as qualified as the men. I worked for a huge telecom company and will tell you that I wasn't paid what my male counterparts were paid. I know this for a fact. Was I as qualified? Well let's just say my boss told me I should be in his job as I knew more than he did and he was sincere in this comment. We had a mutual respect for each other. Is there a glass ceiling? You betcha! Are we still fighting to get paid as much as men? The answer is yes but if you look at the actual surveys done on this subject you will still find women are not paid as much as their male counterparts!
Glass ceiling! How thick and how clear is it? I can't see it. It is an optical illusion. It is a dirty, filthy little lie, just like all the other lies that feminists have been spouting. Course, this is what they are good at. It is clearly a woman's destination to lie and cheat. There is no man who can swear and lie and cheat half so boldly as a woman. That's what women are good at. Few women have the desire to chase adventure and endure hardship and work long hours. Why should they? They get everything they want from men. Why should they work at all? Some women just don't work at all. They just expect to be given everything just because they are women. HA! HA!
The concept that a "glass ceiling" exists for women only may be fine rhetoric, but it simply is not true. Have we heard from the millions of men who didn't get the promotion? Was there a "glass ceiling" for them too? Or was it lack of talent, experience and a host of other component disclaimers? If a " glass ceiling" exists for women, and we cannot prove conclusively that there indeed is one, then we must conclude that it may also exist for men.
To be sure, those women who want to achieve high position must make a lot of sacrifices. They must work late, work weekends and continually polish their personal lenses in order to achieve executive vision. Comparatively few women are willing to risk life and limb to do battle in this arena. Remember women have these eggs that have to be fertilised, or else!!
hmmm...so I am confused.. Is Merkel worth 26 trillion, is this article and journalist saying that is a good thing? I am sorry, just confused by the message, I thought journalists and the left have said being really rich is a bad evil thing....
I just wish they would get their story straight...Otherwise, I work in medical billing in which you can make some money at...it is dominated by women and as far as I know, i do not make more then they do...since merkel is an example of a women who is rich and high in government.. can we finally say that this issue is not as prevalent as it used to be by at least 15 years, and put it to rest.
BTW.. can we start teaching children in school the way it used to be, and not just catering to girls like they have been the last decade.. girls didn't fall behind back then, now boys are falling behind because they are being punished for acting like boys.
Condi Rice is just a front man, going places and doing nothing. I can`t come up with anything worth while that she has done. She`s just like Obama in Iraq, just a photo shoot. Some bloggers blame the President for Katrina, bull. New Orleans is a city that should have never been built. The mayor and his crew knew the hurricane was on the way and did nothing. They had 5 days, still they blame the President. The mayor and governor should have taken steps to insure that the people living on public assistance would be taken care of, they were not.
I am a professional who also took time out in my career to take care of my children, and then returned. There are laws in place to prevent discrimination due to gender, and attention should be focused on enforcing them. You cannot compare a man's salary to a woman's salary in a general sense, and make broad statements on the podium. You have to look at years worked in the field, seniority, experience, etc. Women have babies and maturnity leave, and this has much to do with the decrease in salary. As far as being mistreated, I have had to assert my rights more with women bosses who have a competitive attitude. We need to be proud of our country for the opportunities given to all of our children of every gender.
HelloMam, you're saying things that the far-left in this country don't want to hear!!
'Nough said!!!
HelloMarn, I agree with everything you said. I also look forward to more companies becoming more enlightnened with regard to things like flex time and other things which will help people balance work and family.
DKS -- you obviously have no idea what 'left' and 'right' mean.
Here we go!! This is where the far-left will ROAR!!!
As a side note, I wonder what the actual statistics say regarding how many women have business and technical degrees. Statistically, women do outnumber men on college campuses in the United States. How many are seeking these types of degrees?
If they're not seeking them, how can anyone legitimately complain about the lack of females in the executive suites? Of course, the left will find any excuse to complain. I mean, the majority of the mainstream media are leftist. It's the same thing regarding the number of blacks in the executive suites.
If those within these groups are not acquiring the credentials, then no one can LEGITIMATELY complain about the lack of non-white males in upper management. Yet, I know the far left has never taken these kinds of facts into consideration. They just like to whine.
Gee, Dilberth, where are these gallant men who are supposed to support us? I'm the main breadwinner in our family because I make twice as much as my husband. I'm not sure what world you live in, but you need to wake up. Women DO have to work, we DO make sacrifices, we DO work long hours, and contrary to what you believe, do not sit around waiting for someone to fertilize our eggs. Get a clue.
Why does the most powerful have to be about money? Why not the most influencial or who has done the most for society?
